Elizabeth Bosley Seegar, 99, died Monday, March 1, 2010 at Pendleton Manor. She was born Oct 7, 1910 in Baltimore MD, one of three children of Dr. J. King B. E. Seegar and Elizabeth Bosley Seegar. Her sister died in 2005 at age 92, her brother in 2007 at age 97. Miss Seegar, as generations of students called her, taught elementary school in Alexandria VA for her entire career, and was in demand as a reading and math tutor after her retirement. A WWII veteran, she served as a Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (the SPARS, from the Coast Guard motto, Semper Paratus, Always Ready) in Washington DC, New York, and Charleston SC as a coding officer, and in the Coast Guard’s Volunteer Reserve in Hawaii until 1953. Her adventurous spirit took her to China, Egypt and Russia, as well as on several educational church-sponsored trips to Israel. “Libby” to her family and friends, she enjoyed many visits in Pendleton County over the years, visiting her nephew Dr. King Seegar and venturing to Spruce Knob and other points of interest, and was very comfortable spending the last half-year of her long life here. A graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore, she was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. She pursued her interest in the arts over the years, becoming an accomplished amateur weaver, potter and painter. She was an active member of the Georgetown Presbyterian congregation in Washington DC, enjoying choir and Bible study. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Jane I. S. Seegar of Towson MD, her brother-in-law,Dr. Howard W. Jones Jr. of Portsmouth VA, and her cousin, Philip P. Purrington Jr. of Kilmarnock VA, as well as seven devoted nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and -nephews. A memorial service is being planned in Baltimore.
