Boyd Joseph Lee Moats , age 73, of Sugar Grove, WV, passed away at his home on Wednesday night. He was born on February 11, 1949, at Summit Point, WV, the son of the late Rev. Boyd W. and Hazel Moats. On May 24, 1986, Joe married Sandra K. (Thompson) Moats, who survives in Sugar Grove.

Joe attended Franklin Schools and had worked at Hanover Shoe Company for 30 years and Softrac for 20 years. He was a Veteran of the US Army. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Moats Chapel AME Church.

Joe is survived by: 2 daughters, Veronica Moats of NC and Jeanetta Belle Moats of Huntington, WV; 2 step daughters, Elaine Arbogast of Sugar Grove and Melissa Moats (Ricky) of Grottoes, VA; a step son, Roger Tingler of Pittsburgh, PA; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 7 sisters, Dellamae Redman of Franklin, WV, Arlene Williams (Samuel) of Stuarts Draft, VA, Darlene Barrow (Debow) of Sugar Grove, WV, Dorthea Nelson of Fishersville, VA, Linda Woodson (Alphonso) of Waynesboro, VA, Genevieve Moats of Killeen, TX, Karen Juarez (Reuben) of Mt. Jackson, VA; 5 brothers, Allen Moats (Kaye) of Sugar Grove, WV, David Moats (Tracy) of Grottoes, VA, Bobby Moats (Liza) of Crimora, VA, Ricky Moats (Melissa) of Grottoes, VA, and Frank Moats of Bridgewater, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 1 brother, Richard Moats; and 5 sisters, Janett L. Moats, Betty Moats, Anna Payton, Cornelia Moore, and Patricia Padzerick.

Joe's family will receive friends on Saturday, May 28, 2022, 5-7 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Eldon Moats officiating.
