Obituary

Brooks Mullenax , age 94, of Circleville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. He was born in Cherry Grove, WV, on July 17, 1927 to the late Edward and Tudie (Waybright) Mullenax. On November 21, 1952, Brooks married Priscilla (Warner) Mullenax of Hunting Ground, who survives.

Mr. Mullenax attended Blue Grass High School. In 1944, with his mother's permission, Brooks enlisted in the US Navy to serve in WWII at the age of 17. He trained in Bay Bridge, MD, and he took a train to Treasure Island, CA for further training, and was later deployed by ship to the South Pacific in Japan. Brooks was a machine gun operator on the small naval ship USS YMS265, recognized as mine sweeper, where he was a part of a 6 man crew that searched the waters of the South Pacific for underwater mines for approximately 2 years. Although serving on a dangerous mission, he cherished and took pride in his time in the Navy.

Brooks had worked at Mullenax Lumber Company for years in Blue Grass, VA and various other places. He worked and retired from the US Forestry Service (1962-1990), after 28 years of service. Brooks was a member of the VFW Post #6454 in Petersburg, WV, Circleville Presbyterian Church,  and Spruce Knob Ruritan Club. He was a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Pendleton Lodge #144 AF & AM.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, Brooks is survived by: 3 daughters, Shirley Bland (Mike) of Keyser, WV, Diana Smith (Edwin) of Harrisonburg, VA, and Rose Johnston of Bartow, WV; a son, Darold Mullenax (Jade Thomas) of Rome, GA; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Grace Smith, Nancy Hedges (Larry), Linda Wilfong (Scott); and a brother, Owen Mullenax (Ruth Anne). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 2 sisters, Avis Veli and Glenna Moyers.

Mr. Mullenax's family will receive friends on Friday, September 17, 2021, 12-2 PM at the Basagic Funeral Hom in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Fletcher Hutchison and Pastor William Vandevender officiating. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, WV, with Military Honors conducted by the US Navy. Memorials may be made to Mountain Hospice, Circleville Presbyterian Church, or Circleville Fire Department.
