Donnie Fray Vandevander, Sr., age 84, of Riverton, WV, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at his home. He was born on June 27, 1942, in Simoda, WV, the son of the late Arlie Clifton “Pete” and Mary Evelyn (Harper) Vandevander. Donnie was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, Ivan and Irma Harper.

Donnie lived a life marked by steady work, community ties, and the simple pleasures he enjoyed most. He attended Circleville High School and focused his career on farming and mining. He had worked for 19 years with Buffalo Coal at Mt. Storm, WV, retiring from the union in 2006. Donnie was a Veteran of the US Army.

Outside of work, Donnie found happiness in the quiet comforts of home. He enjoyed sitting on his porch with his cats, watching the traffic go by. He was also a member of Operating Engineers Local #132 for 53 years and the Pendleton County Farm Bureau for over 50 years, connections that reflected both his working life and his ties to the community around him.

Donnie leaves behind to treasure his memory: a son, D.J. Vandevander (Liane) of Riverton, WV; a sister, Patricia Liller of Riverton, WV; and 2 grandsons, Lucas (Macee Ours) and Layton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his companion of many years, Cynthia “Cindy” Jordan (September 2026); and his nephew, Tim Wimer.

In honoring Donnie's wishes, his body has been cremated and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
