Eric “Scott” Helmick, age 50, of Cabins, WV, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at his home following an extended illness. He was born on March 27, 1976 in Petersburg, WV, the son of the late Robert F Helmick and RayJeanna “Jean” (Ours) VanMeter and husband Rick who also raised Scott as his own. On June 1, 2014, Scott married his loving wife, Leah Bernedette (Miller) Helmick, who survives in Cabins.

Mr. Helmick graduated from Petersburg High School in 1995 and furthered his education at Diesel Institute of America. He worked at American Woodmark in Moorefield, WV and as a diesel mechanic for many years, until his illness. Scott attended Cornerstone Family Fellowship and was an avid member of the 304 Elite Riding Club where he served as their safety officer. With his technical skills, he had a gift for tinkering around and fixing almost anything. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, smoking meats, Mountain Dew, and being the pyrotechnic for the occasional firework displays. Scott leaves behind cherished memories of the love he had for his family and the moments he spent with them.

In addition to his wife, Scott is survived by: a daughter, Brooke Helmick of Cabins, WV; a son, Logan Helmick of Cabins, WV; 5 brothers, Rodney Helmick (Jolene) of Petersburg, WV; Mark Helmick (Sue) of Salem, WV; Ricky VanMeter of Cabins, WV; Matthew Helmick (Robin) of Harrisville, WV; Robert Helmick, Jr. (Stephanie) of Jarvisville, WV; 3 sisters, Areta Deisher (Jamie) of Franklin, WV; Kathy Nicholson (D.L.) of West Union, WV; April Helmick of Harrisville, WV; numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his Paternal and Maternal Grandparents and a nephew, Matthew VanMeter.

Scott’s family will receive friends on Thursday, August 13, 2026, 5-7 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor PJ Landis officiating. Interment will be at the VanMeter Cemetery, Cabins, WV.
