Gene Scott Hammer, age 84, of Franklin, WV, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019 at Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, WV. He was born on September 11, 1934, in Franklin, WV, the son of the late George Osceola and Roma (Ruddle) Hammer. On December 16, 1953, Gene married Roxie (Landes) Hammer, who survives in Moorefield, WV.
Mr. Hammer had worked for 13 years as Manager of the Grant County Press, and he retired after 30 years of service as the Franklin Postmaster. He was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, he was a Petersburg City Council Member, and a Democratic chairperson of Grant County. Scott enjoyed relaxing on his porch and talking with family and friends. He was a stamp and coin collector and he had a passion for hunting.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hammer is survived by: a son, Gene Scott Hammer, Jr. (Sharon Ciccolella) of Moorefield, WV; a grandson, Gene Scott Hammer, III (Kristin Tuckerwiller) of Harrisonburg, VA; a granddaughter, Toni Marie Hammer (Denny Ritchey) of Knoxville, TN; a great-grandson, Tucker Scott Hammer; a great-granddaughter, Leah Rose Ritchey;2 sisters, Ima Warner of Harrisonburg, VA, Orva Sponaugle (Dale) Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, John C,. Hammer (Rebecca) of Petersburg, WV; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 2 brothers, George Ona Hammer and Dale Ruddle Hammer; and 2 sisters, Juanita Blanche Hammer, and Neva Catherine Evick.
Mr. Hammer's family will receive friends on Thursday, July 11, 2019, 3-6 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will be on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Father Mario Claro officiating. Interment will be in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens in Franklin.
