Obituary

Harmon "Junior" Moats , affectionately known as "Uncle June", was born on November 11, 1930 in Moatstown, WV. He was the fourth oldest of ten children born of the late Albert & Cleriece Moats.

During those difficult economic times, there was little opportunity for meaningful work. Harmon thought the Navy would offer him better opportunities. After his mother granted approval, he joined the United States NAVY as a Gunner's Mate at the tender age of 17, where he served four years on the USS Little Rock, USS Des Moines, Battleship, Light Cruisier, Troop-transporter and supply warships during the Korean Conflict.

In 1948, Harmon met his future wife, the late Iola Virginia McSween; they married in 1950 and settled in NY where he commenced a career of 36 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. Through this marital union, they produced four children: Greer and Lisa (twins), Harmon L. ( Junior ) and Maggie.

On the GI bill he went to school for auto mechanics, which became a thriving hobby of his. To support his growing family, Harmon often worked several part-time jobs; one being a NYC cab driver for over 12 years. He sought additional employment to ensure that his children had the best educational opportunities. He was no nonsense about education with his children.

Harmon served as a historian for the Charleston Gazette newspaper on a featured article that discussed the interracial genealogy of Moatstown. He was also one of the primary historians for the book "The Blacks of Pendleton County" written by Bill Rexroad.

June was a strong Christian man, serving as an Elder for over 10 years at St. Augustine's Presbyterian Church in the Bronx, NY and as a Trustee for the Moatstown AME Methodist church for many years. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the Lightstone Foundation Board of Directors.

One of his hobbies was playing the guitar and he loved listening to Blues music and watching Western movies.

As a hard worker, he never took off time when he was sick, he retired from the US Postal Service in 1985 with in excess of 3,000 hours of accrued sick time. Upon retirement, he and Iola returned to Moyers, WV to enjoy quiet country living.

Harmon J. Moats passed away at the age of 88 on July 9 th , 23 years and one month to the date of his late wife. He was preceded in death by his late wife of 43 years and daughter Greer. He leaves to mourn, daughters Lisa and Maggie, son Harmon and grandson, Michael.

Harmon was a family man – his motto was "Love your family, call your family, let nothing divide family - because after GOD, family is everything."
