Obituary

Helen Arveda (Sherwood) Berg , age 78, of Maysville, WV, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. She was born on December 2, 1942, in Oakmont, WV, the daughter of the late Richard Everson and Clementine (Paugh) Sherwood. On August 14, 1960, Helen married Therman Walter Berg, who preceded her in death on December 19, 2020.

Mrs. Berg attended school in Elk Garden and formerly attended Cabins Assembly of God. She had previously worked at Hesters in Moorefield, WV and for Grant County Commission on Aging. Helen was former member of the American Legion Post #78 Ladies Auxiliary. She had a passion for working crossword puzzles and cooking, making the best homemade bread in the county. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Helen leaves behind to cherish her memories: 3 daughters, Arveda Duncan Berg (Dewayne), Natalie Berg (Tony), Barbara Berg (Kim), all of Maysville, WV; a special daughter, Laura Coleman (Tim) of Roanoke, VA; 3 sons, James W. Berg of Maysville, WV, Timothy W. Berg (Laura) of Cabins, WV, Roger W. Berg (Kathy) of Maysville, WV; a special son, Joseph Gallant of Maysville, WV; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William Carlisle Sherwood (Brenda) of Kitzmiller, MD; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: a great-great-granddaughter, Paisley Haygood; 2 brothers, Richard Everson Sherwood II, Larry Joseph Sherwood; and 2 sisters, Arlena Ardene McRobie and Regina Sherwood Newlin.

Mrs. Berg's family will receive friends on Monday, October 18, 2021, 5-7 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Coleman Clark officiating. Interment will be in the Barger Cemetery on Jordan Run.
