Obituary

Jack Gene McKinney, age 86, of Petersburg, WV, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at his home.  Mr. McKinney was born on March 10, 1938 in Petersburg, the son of the late Rodney I McKinney and Marguerite (Davis) McKinney Parsons.  On December 29, 1963, Jack married his lovely wife of 60 years, Virginia Kathryn (Hedrick) McKinney, who survives in Petersburg.

Mr. McKinney was a 1957 graduate of Petersburg High School where he was Drum Major and active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the highest honor of becoming an Eagle Scout.  After high school, Jack joined the National Guard and began working at the Moorefield Skating Rink where he met his wife.  In 1963, he moved to Baltimore, MD with his bride and began to build their life together.  The happy couple welcomed their first child in 1964 and second in 1973.  Jack quickly became involved in his community, joining the Jephthah Lodge #222 AF & AM in 74', the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and in 1976, Job's Daughters International with his daughter, Melissa.

In 1983 Jack moved his family to Omaha, NE where he began a new career with AT&T until his retirement in 95'.  The family then moved back to Petersburg where Jack continued to stay busy in his community.  He was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol, Burlington United Methodist Auxiliary, serving as corresponding secretary for 25 years, member of the Petersburg Masonic Lodge #145, Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #146, and active member in the choir of the churches he attended, including the Potomac Highland Men's Choir.  He was a member of the Main St. United Methodist Church and most recently, attended Hedrick's Chapel.   Jack never stopped learning new things, he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, and was proficient in working on computers.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by: a daughter, Melissa (McKinney) Lambros of Maysville, WV; a son Michael G McKinney of Omaha, NE; a sister, JoAnn (McKinney) Kiner (Adren) of Geneva, OH; 2 brothers, John McKinney (Val) of Newport News, VA; Frank McKinney of Nutter Fort, WV; 3 Grandchildren, Alissa Lambros of Aberdeen, MD; Stephanie (Lambros) Combs (Joshua) of Weirton, WV; Hunter M. McKinney of Omaha, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.   He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances (McKinney) Rikard.

Jack's family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, 6-8 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Nathan Eppling and Jim Tompkins officiating.  Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV with Masonic Rights bestowed by the Petersburg Masonic Lodge #145.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hedrick's Chapel, POB 834, Petersburg, WV 26847 and Cancer Research.  Memories and words of comfort may be left at www.basagic.com or on Facebook at Basagic Funeral Home.
