Obituary

John Roy Bowers, Jr, age 91, passed away February 4, 2021, at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, VA. He was born on August 28, 1929, in Sugar Grove, WV, to the late Roy and Erma (Hoover) Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Florence Heatwole and brother, William Bowers.

Mr. Bowers graduated from Augusta Military Academy and he attended Bridgewater College. Then he met the love of his life and his wife of 70 years, Clinton Ann Johnson and married on January 26, 1951.

Mr. Bowers was a merchant and a poultry farmer. He was a lifelong member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Sugar Grove Lions Club, as well as a 50 year member of Pendleton Masonic Lodge #144 AF & AM and the Potomac Highland Shriners Club, and he had served with the Army National Guard.

Mr. Bowers is survived by: his wife, Clinton Ann Bowers; his 4 children, Diana Smith of Sugar Grove, Clinton Bowers (Donna) of Sugar Grove, Roy Bowers (Teresa) of Sugar Grove, Maria Miller (Richard) of Weyers Cave, VA; 13 grandchildren, Suzanne Brubeck, Jason Smith, Justin Bowers, Anthony Bowers, Whitney Saulton, Seth Bowers, Addam Botkin, Krystle Naylor, Brennan Miller, Zach Campbell, Danielle Sisson, Tabitha Brogan, and Cody Varner; as well as 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his rescue cat, "Tom".

John will always be remembered for his giving heart, welcoming smile and his passion for giving treats to children that came into the store.

Friends may pay their respects at the Basagic Funeral Home on Saturday, February 13, 2021, 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Sugar Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Judy Vetter officiating and Masonic services will be conducted by Pendleton Lodge #144 AF & AM. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated for South Fork Fire Department, POB 297, Brandywine, WV 26802 or South Fork Rescue Squad, POB 6, Sugar Grove, WV 26815.
