Obituary

Julia Juanita Foley, age 96, of Arthur, WV, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2026 at Courtland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, WV. She was born on July 29, 1930 on the family farm in Lahmansville, WV, the daughter of the late Walter and Nellie (Dettinburn) Dayton. On September 13, 1953 Julia married Charles L. Foley who preceded her in death on December 4, 2019.

As a 1950 graduate of Petersburg High School, Julia was an active participant in the band where she played the trumpet for 3 years. Following her dream of becoming an RN, in 1953, she graduated from Kings Daughters School of Nursing in Martinsburg, WV, took her state boards in Baltimore, MD, and began working at Fort Howard Veterans Hospital in Baltimore for 30 years. She also worked at the Baltimore City and University of Maryland Hospital. As a result of her hard work and dedication, Julia received many awards including the Heart and Hands Award for the state of Maryland and the VA Hospitals.

Julia’s husband was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict, stirring her great support of the veterans of our country. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, reading, playing the piano, and singing in the choir. Julia was a member of the Maysville Bible Brethren Church and devoted Christian.

She considered her greatest mission in life was to care for her beloved husband, Charles, after his illness robbed him of his independence. She stayed faithfully by his side till he passed on. Although she and Charles had no children of their own, she was instrumental in the life of many other children. Julia always had an overflowing candy dish that graced her table for all to enjoy. Julia’s never ending smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She received great enjoyment from her many pets and her beloved dog, Scooter.

Julia is survived by a brother, Robert Dayton (Margaret) of Lahmansville, WV and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: 3 brothers, James, Eldon, and infant Johnny Dayton; 2 sisters, Geneve Zirk; and Mary Secrist.
