Leland Elwood Propst , age 82 of Franklin, WV, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, VA. He was born on July 21, 1936 in Moyers, WV, the son of the late Pinkney Lawrence and Sarah "Sallie" Harper Propst. Leland married Joann Hedrick Propst, who preceded him in death on November 9, 2005.
Mr. Propst was a 1955 graduate of Franklin High School, a Veteran of the US Army, and was awarded Pendleton County Democrat of the Year in 2000. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, The American Legion, and a charter member of the Franklin Ruritan Club. Mr. Propst had worked at the Franklin Meat Market and had served as Sheriff of Pendleton County from 1977-1984, Magistrate of Pendleton County from 1989-2012, and owner of Propst Insurance.
Mr. Propst is survived by: a daughter, Crystal Ceely and husband Richard of Franklin; a granddaughter, Kiersten Ceely of Franklin; a step granddaughter, Amber Christian; a step sister, Mary Alice Evick and husband Bennie of Franklin; 4 nephews who were considered brothers, Burton Propst and wife Linda of Harrisonburg, Bruce Propst of Frederick, MD, Gary Propst and wife Janet of Harrisonburg, Ricky Propst and wife Paula of Richmond, VA; 2 nieces, Cynthia Hurry and husband Bob and Sheila Lambert and husband Jerry, all of Franklin; a special friend, Genevieve Glover of Franklin; and many other Nieces and Nephews . In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by: 2 brothers, Vernon and Kenneth Propst; and 2 nephews who were considered brothers, Nathan Propst, survived by his wife Linda of Brandywine, and Rudy Propst, survived by his wife Debbie of Harrisonburg.
Mr. Propst's family will receive friends on Friday, October 26, 2018, 5-8 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Jason and Jessi Felici officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard and Camp Dawson.
