Lois Carol
Huffman
October 2, 1942 – June 6, 2024
Lois Carol Murphy Huffman , age 81, of Ft. Seybert, WV, passed away at her home on Thursday, June 6, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a 17- year battle with cancer. She was born during WWII while her father was working in the shipyards, on October 2, 1942, In Baltimore, MD, the daughter of the late Earl Newton and Dora Belle (Hartman) Murphy.
After the War, Lois' family returned to Franklin and she graduated from Franklin High School in 1960. After High School, Lois moved to Washington, DC where she met Wayne A. Huffman (from Riverton, WV), who became her husband of 59 years on April 1, 1961. They made their home in DC and then Maryland. Lois graduated from Prince George's Community College with a degree in Nursing in 1981. She was employed by Prince George Community Hospital as an orthopedic RN for about a year. Upon Wayne's retirement from the DC Fire Department, the family moved back to Pendleton County and built their home in Ft. Seybert in 1982. Lois then began work at the Pendleton Nursing Home for 4 years until she became employed by the Committee on Aging for 10 years before retiring in 2000.
Lois was instrumental in writing and obtaining grants for South Fork Fire Department, assisting them in getting much needed equipment and trucks. She served on the Pendleton County Historical Society Board for 15 years. Lois loved genealogy and took pride in compiling histories and information for many generations of their families. In her earlier years, she loved to read and paint oil landscapes. Lois was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Lois leaves behind to cherish her memory: a son, Barry Alan Huffman of Fort Seybert; a daughter, Jennifer Ann Huffman Dudley (Garrett) of Gordonsville, Virginia; five grandchildren Ashley Huffman of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Samantha Huffman (Josh) of Appomattox, Virginia, Christopher Huffman (Hannah) of Franklin, Sidney Gillis (David) of Charlottesville, Virginia, Thomas Carr (Beck) of Richmond, Virginia; 2 great-grandchildren, Myles Huffman and June Gillis; and a sister-in-law, Ethel (Gerald) Murphy. In addition to her husband on July 27, 2020, and her parents, she was preceded in death by: two brothers, Grayson Earl Murphy and Gerald Hartman Murphy.
Lois' family will receive friends on Sunday, June 9, 2024, 6-8 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Kyle Apple, David Hartman, and Betty Kimble officiating. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, WV. Memorials may be made to Pendleton County Historical Society, c/o Richard Ruddle, 5653 Buffalo Hills Road, Franklin, WV 26807.
