Obituary

Martha Lee  (Bland) Hedrick Brotemarkle, age 85, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021. Born April 9, 1935 in Monkey Town, Riverton, West Virginia to Ernest and Kate Bland. Martha married James Donald Brotemarkle on July 30, 1966 in Riverton, WV, they celebrated 50 years together with a surprise party in 2016.

Martha worked at Hedrick's 4-U Restaurant before moving to Ohio from West Virginia. She then worked at Conley's Department Store in Chardon, Ohio from 1966 to their closing in 1991. "One of the Conley's Girls". She was the last one to close the door at Conley's. She went to work at Rite Aid in 1991 and retired from there in 2015. Everywhere she worked she was always entrusted as the "Keeper of the Key" and called to work any and all hours. If they did not call her, she would call them.

Martha liked working and working with people. She loved to have and plan parties. She had parties for everyone and everything! Many held in their barn, with some square dancing and "camp" pies. Her favorite hobby was gardening and waiting anxiously for her green beans to come in so she could string and can. Her favorite dessert was carrot cake and Rice Krispie treats and brought them to every family dinner.

They made many trips to West Virginia to spend weekends and time with family and friends. Everyone came to the "homeplace", so many good times to remember.

She is survived by her husband, James D. Brotemarkle of Hambden Township, OH; sons, Harold (Mary) Hedrick, Jeffery (Denise) Hedrick; Grandchildren, Sharon K. Palmer, Jamie M. Thobe, Katie G. (Kurt) Ragle, Amanda R. (Kaya Gezlev) Hedrick; Great Grandchildren, Allison and Zachary Thobe, Jase Palmer, Jocelyn and Evan Ragle, 2 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren; siblings, Frances (Ernest) Bergdoll, Jerry (Tammy) Bland, Patsy (Carl) Armentrout and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harmon H. Hedrick whom she was married to from 1953 to 1962. sons, Anthony and David H. Hedrick; brother, Ernest "Bud" (Gwen) Bland Jr.; grandson, David Ryan Hedrick; niece, Crystal Bergdoll and nephew, Vincent Bland.

Mrs. Bland's family will receive friends on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, WV. The family suggest donations to Hambden Twp. Fire Department, 9867 Old State Road, Chardon, Ohio 44024, or the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44110. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Rescue Workers at the Hambden Twp. Fire Dept and the special care received at home from the caregivers of the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
