Obituary

Mary Lea Hahn McCoy, age 99, of Franklin WV passed away peacefully on November 8th at her home surrounded by her children. She was born on September 13th, 1926, in Brandywine, WV to Henry Davis Hahn and Ethel Florence Kiser Hahn and is remembered for her service to children her community and her family. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

She was a devoted wife to her late husband Robert G. McCoy and a loving mother to her children; Brenda McCoy Lowery (Darrel), Patricia McCoy Price (Julian), Martha Susan Shafferman, Julie McCoy Gruenthal and Robert Hahn McCoy (Julie). She was a cherished grandmother to six grandchildren, Nathan David Shafferman (Madelein), Troy Robert Shafferman (Kathy), Thomas McCoy Lowery, Rachel Grace Lowery, Jason McCoy Gruenthal and Benjamin Harold Gruenthal and a great grandmother to four great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Lea was preceded in death by: a brother, Arthur "Bud" Webster Hahn; and three sisters, Medrith Garber, Elizabeth Snyder, and Jean Snyder.

She graduated from Franklin High School, class of 1945. She attended Potomac State College followed by Madison College (now JMU) where she earned a BS degree in Education.

During her teaching career she taught 1st and 4th grades, and special education in WV, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio and Virginia.

Throughout her life she was an enthusiastic leader and generously gave her time and talents to many church and community organizations including 4 H, girls sports, Sunday and Bible School, Women's Circle Groups, and Home and Garden clubs. She served over 12 years as a Girl Scout troop Leader and held various leadership positions within the larger Scouting organization. In 1976 she was honored with the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital pin.

After retirement she and her husband returned to their home in Pendleton County where she continued her involvement in the community and enjoyed her hobbies of crafting, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends.

Mary Lea's family will receive friends on Thursday, November 13, 2025, 5-7 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will be on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Franklin Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Debbie Beam officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin, WV. Memorials may be made to any Pendleton County Rescue Squad or the Franklin Presbyterian Church.
