Obituary

Michael Dean Haynes, age 74, of Petersburg, WV and formerly of Colfax, LA, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Valley Health Winchester Medical Center in Virginia.  He was born July 22, 1950 in Talladega, AL, the son of the late Floyce Watson and Mary Vester (Smith) Haynes.  On June 26, 2014 Mike married Mary Kathryn "Kathy" (Sherman) Haynes, who survives in Petersburg.

Mr. Haynes attended Minden High School in Minden, LA and Bakers Chapel United Methodist Church in Moorefield, WV.  Mike began his career of 30 years in the United States Army with a tour in Germany and retiring as a Master Sergeant.  He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Louisiana and a member of the American Legion Post #78 in Petersburg, WV.  Mike enjoyed spending time with his family camping and fishing for bass.  With a competitive nature, he entered fishing tournaments with several victories under his belt.  Mike will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and fur babies, Kasper and Kraven, and will leave behind a legacy of service for country and love to his family.

In addition to his wife, Mike leaves behind to cherish his memory: a daughter, Renee Haynes of Kolin, LA; a step-daughter, Carla Yocom (Dan) of Washington Boro, PA; a step-son, John "JD" Smith (Kelsey) of Romney, WV; a sister, Brenda Prince (Tommy) of Minden, LA; a brother, Danny Haynes (JoAnna) of Minden, LA; 5 Grandchildren, Olenader, Rachel, and Lilian Yocom, Mason Bohrer, and Archer Smith.   He was preceded in death by a son, David Haynes; 3 brothers, Jack, Dennis, and Joe Haynes; and a sister, Judy White.

Mike's family will receive friends on Monday, May 5, 2025, 12-2 PM, at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV.  A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastors Harold George and Mike Funkhouser officiating.  Military honors will be bestowed by the U.S. Army and the Grant County Veteran Honor Guard.  Memorials may be made to the family c/o Basagic Funeral Home, POB 400 Petersburg, WV 26847.  Memories and words of comfort may be left at www.basagic.com or on Facebook at Basagic Funeral Home.
