March 3, 1942 – August 31, 2021
Nancy Mowery Sites , age 79 of Upper Tract, WV, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. She was born March 3, 1942, the daughter of the late Edith Streets Mowery and Dayton Mowery, and grand-daughter of David Clark Mowery, at her family's home in Reeds Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael Stearn Sites (1930-2005), and her siblings Gordon "Trig" Mowery, Mabel Flanagan, Thelma Hedrick, Viola "Toots" Shreve, Orville Mowery, Maurice "Tom" Mowery, Delbert Mowery, and five siblings who died in infancy. She is survived by her children Melissa Jo Sites (husband Ian Blackwell Rogers) of Greenbelt MD, Michelle Clark Sites (husband Jason Womble) of Upper Tract, grandson Jamie Rogers-Sites, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nancy attended West Virginia University from which she received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. Nancy taught elementary school for 34 years in Pendleton County. She was a member and elder at Franklin Presbyterian Church. She served on the board of the Pendleton County Health Department and the Board of Parks. She was active with the establishment of Ruddle Park.
Nancy was eternally optimistic and a strong, capable person. A devoted mother and grandmother, Nancy lived her dream of teaching in Pendleton County, marrying Mike Sites, and helping him on the farm. She overcame terrible obstacles, including a severe burn at the age of ten that put her in Children's Hospital in Baltimore for 16 months, followed by a bout with rheumatic fever when she was in high school that caused her to miss a big part of the year. She had perfect school teacher handwriting, high standards in housekeeping, a huge and bountiful vegetable garden, no fear of hard work, a bright smile and an unending well of kindness to give to her students and everyone she met.
Nancy's family will receive friends on Sunday, September 5, 2021, 2-3 PM, at her home at 9877 Petersburg Pike, Upper Tract, WV, under the back drop of the red barn that she loved so much, with parking in the pasture behind the barn. A celebration of life and remembrance will follow at 3:00 PM with Pastor Jessi Felici officiating. Memorials may be made to any Pendleton County Emergency Rescue Squad. Memories and words of comfort may be left at www.basagic.com or on Facebook at Basagic Funeral Home.
