Opal Joyce Nutt , age 81, of Petersburg, WV, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at her residence. She was born on January 10, 1940, in Harrisonburg, VA, the daughter of the late Emmett Jehu and Helen Virginia (Hartman) Halterman. Her first husband, Jack Yokum, preceded her in death on April 8, 1981. She then married George Nutt, who preceded her in death on June 8, 2016.
Opal attended Moorefield High School and formerly attended the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. She had worked at many places throughout her life, including the former Windsor Knit Sewing Factory in Petersburg and Franklin Garment Company in Franklin, as well as many local eateries as a waitress and bartender. She was a member of the American Legion Post #78 Ladies Auxiliary. Opal had a passion for reading, working crosswords, making clothes for her children as well as their barbie doll clothing. She loved riding horses and participated in horse shows, where she placed 1 st in many of her competitions .
Opal is survived by: 3 daughters, Lynne Redmon of Moorefield, WV, Liz Huffman (Dan) of Seneca Rocks, WV, Tammey Pyle (Don) of Maysville, WV; 4 sons, Virgil "Bub" Yokum (Christina Nelson) of Seneca Rocks, WV, Jody Yokum (Mickie Kimble) of Seneca Rocks, WV, George Nutt of Petersburg, WV, Daniel Nutt (Jennifer) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and spouses, she was preceded in death by: a granddaughter, Jaime Whetzel.; and a brother, Virgil Halterman
Opal's family will receive friends on Thursday, May 13, 2021, 6-8 PM, at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021, at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Chris Whetzel officiating. Interment will be in South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens, Petersburg, WV. Memorials my be made to the American Legion Post #78.
