Roger Lee Secrist, age 74 of Petersburg, WV, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Grant County Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg. He was born on December 23, 1944 in Cross, WV, the son of the late Virgil Andrew and Pearl Ida (Brown) Secrist. On July 18, 1964, Roger married Frances Darlene (Green) Secrist, who survives in Petersburg.
Mr. Secrist was a 1962 graduate of Bruce High School in Westernport, MD and he was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Petersburg. Roger had worked as a coal miner in North Branch Mine in Bayard for 13 years and 1976-2014 as Owner/Operator of Petersburg Auto Wreckers.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Secrist is survived by: 3 daughters, Robin Barr, of Petersburg, Brenda Fisher, of Moorefield, WV, Angela Champ of Cabins, WV; 7 sisters, Linda Shillingburg of Terra Alta, WV, Mary Harvey (Ellis) of Elk Garden, WV, Kathryn Elliott (Terry) of Kitzmiller, MD, Lily Moats (Wayne) of Oakland, MD, Wilma Jean Howdyshell (Paul) of Shallmar, MD, Betty Kidwell (Tom) of Martinsburg, WV, Wanda Secrist of Oakland, MD; a brother, Kenny Secrist (Betty) of Jane Lew, WV; 7 grandchildren, Brittney Smallwood, Ashley Bland, Misti Carpenter, Wesley Barr, Nelson Fisher, Micaiah Fisher, Austin Barr; and 10 great-grandchildren, Naomi, JT, and Jacobi Smallwood, Gracie and Connar Carpenter, William, Aliayah, and Messiah Fisher, and Jared and Lucas Bland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 4 brothers, Melvin, Virgil, Duke, Bill; and a sister, Martha Beavers.
Mr. Secrist's family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2019, 9-10:30 AM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Petersburg, with Father Joshua Stephens officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Barton, MD. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or ASPCA.
