Shirley Susan
Schaefer
May 16, 1938 – July 7, 2024
Shirley Susan Schaefer peacefully entered into eternal rest at her home in Kingsport, Tenn. on Sunday morning, July 7, 2024.
Born May 16, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Rodney and Nora Berg of Maysville, W.Va.
Born into a large, hard-working farm family, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, infant Wayne Berg, Forrest "Sam" Berg and Delmas "Galen" Berg; and three sisters, Juanita Berg, Geraldine Berg Simmons and Betty Berg Simonsen.
Shirley has two surviving children from her first marriage to Clifton Rogers: Gregory Rogers (Bonnie) of Old Fields, W.Va. and Tammy Rogers Young of Kingsport.
Two children from her second marriage to Edgar Hibbard preceded her in death: Tina Hibbard Donnelly (Tim) and Terry Hibbard, both of Shady Side, Md.
Shirley is survived by Frank Schaefer, husband of 40 years. Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Susan Michelle Schaefer Leininger; six grandchildren, Jessalyn Donnelly Hadfield, Shannon Donnelly, Hugh Donnelly, William Young, John Rogers, and Alyssa Leininger Metzger; two sisters, Alberta Reel and Karen (Tony) Kimble; and two brothers, Verlin (Peter/Lois) and Hetzel (Cub/Linda).
Shirley worked at and retired from AT&T after 25 years of service. She worked as a telephone operator at a point in time when calls had to be transferred via cords and plugs. Shirley was an avid NASCAR (Jeff Gordon) fan and attended many of the Daytona races. In later years, she rarely missed watching a race on TV. She grew up in the time of Elvis and collected many memorabilia items.
Shirley was a very meticulous person with everything placed neatly and in order. She loved her figurines and her pretties. She was very proud of her six grandchildren that God blessed her with and was not afraid to tell you so. Shirley was very social and never met a stranger. She enjoyed the beach trips with family and friends and was never one to shy away from outings.
Although our wife, mother, sister and grandmother will be missed greatly, she will be welcomed into Heaven with open arms.
Shirley's family will receive friends on Saturday, September 7, 2024,10:30 -11:00 AM, at the Maysville Bible Brethren Church, Maysville, WV. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lynn Durbin officiating. Memorials donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
